Susan served as Putnam’s informant on the case, and her information allowed the FBI Agent to apprehend Lockhart by the end of the year. In 1987, FBI agent Mark Putnam began an investigation in the area where Susan Smith lived. His target was a famous bank robber, Carl Edward Lockhart.
